Who we are
Plan International UK is a global children’s charity. We work with girls and boys growing up in some of the world’s poorest communities, making sure they have access to the education, health care, clean water and future opportunities they need to thrive.
Having access to education is crucial for every child as they grow and develop. Education is also one of the most powerful tools in breaking the cycle of poverty.
Our project
Supporting Adolescent Girls’ Education in Zimbabwe (SAGE)
In Zimbabwe, girls are facing many challenges to access education. 1 in 4 girls will never make it to secondary school leading them to miss out on vital basic literacy and numeracy skills. Beliefs about their ability and worth as well as obstacles at home and within their communities hold them back from opportunities to learn, in school or out.
Plan International’s Supporting Adolescent Girls’ Education (SAGE) project has been running for five years since August 2018. Through SAGE, 13,460 out-of-school girls aged 11-19 years old have been learning the skills they need to build a safe and prosperous future for themselves.
Girls are learning life-changing literacy, numeracy and English at our 88 community-based Learning Hubs. Over 6,000 older girls are taking part in vocational training to learn trades which enable them to start earning a safe living. Through the Champions of Girls’ Education life skills programme, girls, boys and their communities have been busting stereotypes about what girls can do. We’ve seen girls become more respected, raise their voices and take up new opportunities using what they’ve learned.
