Inspiring the Next Generation: Diversity Day at St Anne’s College, University of Oxford

On Thursday, 14th November 2024, St Anne’s College, Oxford, proudly hosted the first of this year’s Diversity Days Programme, delivered by the Naz Legacy Foundation. This inspiring initiative welcomed 24 Year 10 students from three senior schools in London, offering them a glimpse into the transformative opportunities of higher education, including life at the prestigious University of Oxford.

Bridging Dreams and Reality

The day began with an engaging Introduction to Higher Education, a session crafted to empower young minds to envision their future paths. The students explored the world of university education, with a particular focus on the Russell Group. This was followed by an interactive Q&A session featuring Oxford student ambassadors and Zainab, a COSARAF Sheikh Family Scholar studying medicine. Zainab shared her personal journey, including the challenges and triumphs of applying to one of the world’s leading universities.

Experiencing Oxford Life

A guided tour of St Anne’s College brought the campus to life. The students explored various facilities, including the vibrant new library and bustling coffee bar, while getting a feel for the first-year common room. Discussions covered the diverse societies, social activities, and traditions that form the heartbeat of student life at Oxford.

Equipping Students for Success

After a refreshing lunch and a break for prayers, students participated in the Student Life Workshop Carousel. These interactive sessions offered practical insights into key aspects of university life: managing finances, thriving academically, and enjoying a balanced social life. Led by ambassadors, the workshops encouraged lively discussions, answering questions that resonated deeply with the students’ aspirations and concerns.

An Academic Taster: Unlocking the Classics

The day culminated in an inspiring academic taster session, “How to Spot a Greek God.” Led by an Oxford professor, this lively exploration of Greek mythology gave students a glimpse into the intellectual rigour and excitement of university-level learning.

A Pathway to Excellence

The Diversity Days Programme provided an invaluable experience for these young people, many from underrepresented backgrounds. They left not only with a clearer understanding of the possibilities at top-tier institutions but also with the confidence that such opportunities are within their reach.

Through initiatives like these, St Anne’s College and the Naz Legacy Foundation continue to break barriers, ignite ambitions, and empower the next generation to achieve their fullest potential. The COSARAF Foundation is proud to support such efforts, championing diversity and inclusion at every level of education.
