Who we are
Advantage Africa supports people affected by poverty, disability and HIV to improve their education, health and incomes. Their work helps some of East Africa’s most vulnerable people to overcome prejudice, help themselves and build a better future for their families and communities.
Our project
Transition Project
Children and young people with intellectual disabilities in Kenya face discrimination due to harmful traditional beliefs and cultural misconceptions about the causes of disability. Once outside the protective school environment, they become even more excluded and vulnerable, and are at risk of further hardship, depression, anti-social behaviour, exploitation and addiction.
Advantage Africa’s project will address this need by enabling 50 young people with intellectual disabilities from low-income families to make a structured and successful transition from school to adult life. Teachers trained in a ground-breaking model of transition will prepare students emotionally and practically to leave school. The school leavers will then be supported with grants to undertake sustainable income-generating activities so they can lead independent, fulfilling lives.
